About Show Off Products and Ena Lane

Ena Lane

Show Off Products was established in 1992 by Ena Lane. Ena bred and showed Shih Tzu for over 20 years, using the "Show Off" prefix as her kennel name.  As a result it seemed natural to name this company and online website Show Off Products.

Ena is committed to being helpful and friendly toward all her customers; professional handlers, breeder exhibitors and novice show people all have kept her in high regard and are loyal customers for all their dog show and grooming needs.

If you have questions, Ena will be happy to help directly. Email;  enalaneis@yahoo.com ;or phone; 951-246-9178. 7am to 4pm Pacific Time, Monday through Friday.

Ena's Story:

Ena started showing Shih Tzu back in the dark ages. She took her first puppy to a "puppy match" which she read about in the newspaper. She bathed the puppy in the kitchen sink and scrubbed her clean...dried her with her own hair dryer using a slicker brush---and chased the puppy around the living room carpet to get it done. Puppy looked great. It was summer and Ena was wearing shorts and she needed to put sun tan oil on her legs. That done, she gets in the car with her husband, puts the puppy on her lap and away they go.

At the park, none of the other Shih Tzu puppies looked anything like her puppy at all. The other puppies were all fluffy while her puppy looked all greasy, (of course it did. she was in "oil" by then) And that was not the only difference between her puppy and the others. She sadly realized that her puppy was the awful word; a pet.

Fast forward about twenty some odd years. Ena has finished over 150 champions, including showing for other people. Ena had been asked to do a grooming video for drop coated dogs, because she was such an "expert"...and all it took was years and years of trial and error.

The following might be helpful to the novice...and Ena is happy to share these suggestions.

  • What everyone needs to know, to win, is first know your standard.
  • Buy a regular stand dryer. The hair dryer for people is too hot, and will fry the coat and doesn''t leave both hands free.
  • Learn how to groom properly and be patient and dedicated about doing it (if you don''t want to groom daily, get a Beagle).
  • Drop coated dogs are time consuming. These days you have to iron the coat, for the well groomed look. Flat irons can be purchased at any beauty supply store.
  • The "Grooming Basics" video will help you tremendously, as it shows everything from the correct way to bathe, all the way through to the ironing.
  • After the show careeer, or for the first time puppy owner The "Basic Haircuts" demonstrates the puppy's first bath, includes information on the types of clipper and blades to use for the different clips.
  • The shampoo and conditioner you use will depends on your water as well as your climate and the type of coat you dog has. (Another trial and error situation)
  • Use a pin brush rather than a slicker, to save hair, and keep it from breaking.
  • Use bands, to keep the hair out of the eyes, and avoid eye problems.
  • Use bands to keep the hair out of the mouth, for two reasons.  First, they chew off the hair that gets into their mouths, and you want a nice long face fall. Secondly, the hair getting between the teeth causes irritation and is bad for the gums.
  • The "Kindness'' Leads are wonderful for protecting the trachea, so that they don''t go around the ring gagging and choking, (yes, that is caused by the pressure of a narrow lead collapsing the trachea).  The dogs love these leads, and so will you.

Now, go get ''em. You are a contender!
